Ceylon Cardamom is available in various forms in the global market;
- Whole Pods: Every pod includes complete seeds that hold the full range of taste until used.
- Ground Cardamom: Although the grinding process may weaken flavor, it is still commonly used in food preparations because of its simplicity.
- Cardamom Oil: This essential oil, obtained by steam distillation, is known for its cheering, encouraging fragrance and medicinal effects. It mixes well with other oils, giving a spicy, woody, and sweet scent to any blend.
Global presence and cultivation:
- Market Share: Sri Lanka represents around 0.1% of the global cardamom market, with exports between 4000 to 5000 tonnes annually. Local cultivation takes place primarily in the districts of Kandy, Matale, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya, Ratnapura, and parts of Galle.
Ceylon Cardamom comes in three varieties based on flower shape:
